Handwashing, Is it Enough to Keep Us Safe ?

Handwashing, Is it Enough to Keep Us Safe ?

by Maureen McGlynn

Hearing about people who are in good health one day and then deathly ill the next, after coming in contact with germs that are resistant to antibiotic treatment is enough to scare anyone. Keeping hands away from the mouth, as well as hand washing and staying away from others who are contagious, are all recommendations made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to protect ourselves, but is this enough to guard us from germs and keep us from getting a serious infection?

In the case of two young ladies who's stories are told on the Dr. Oz website, I'm not so sure, especially after they came in contact with the superbug, MRSA. Is there anything else we can do in addition to the guidelines from the CDC to help prevent what happened to these girls?

Hand washing is good advice, but what if we find ourselves in a situation where there isn't a place to wash up with soap and water? Disinfectant wipes are an option, but even then our hands only remain germ-free until we come in contact with more germs. When we are in a public setting, there isn't any way to determine who is and who isn't sick, so this makes it difficult to keep our distance from those who are ill.

Our children also find themselves in these types of situations. School restrooms can have empty soap dispensers. Sick children are sent to school because parents are unaware they are contagious or can't get time off from work. Students in packed hallways and full classrooms could easily end up next to others who have an infection. Adults and children alike can find themselves in circumstances where following the advice of the CDC does not always seem possible.

MRSA, short for Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, is a rapidly spreading strain of deadly bacteria that has become resistant to commonly prescribed antibiotics. The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), a medical journal that has the largest circulation in the world, stated that invasive MRSA in the United States is no longer confined to intensive care units, acute care hospitals, or health care institutions. The disease is now a major public health problem. According to the CDC, MRSA kills 19,000 Americans each year. With antibiotics becoming less effective, we need to find a new form of protection to help treat and keep us from getting infections caused by superbugs and other resistant germs.

What more can we do to protect ourselves and our loved ones when it comes to contagious diseases? Supporting our immune systems seems like a good place to start since the immune system takes care of anything that causes disease in the body. A super-aid to the immune system might prove beneficial in helping us be less vulnerable to serious infections and contagious diseases that are becoming resistant to antibiotics. An investigation into finding solutions to this life-threatening problem resulted in silver being utilized as a treatment to prevent and combat serious infections. Apparently silver has been used for thousands of years to keep food and water safe.

Recent advances in processing silver have resulted in the production of silver particles so small they can enter a single red blood cell. A newly patented form of silver solution, actually called a silver sol, due to its unique suspension process, has catalytic properties that allow a single silver particle to neutralize infectious micro-organisms continuously. Older silver solutions are only capable of destroying one micro-organism per silver particle.

Silver solutions made in the past also yielded silver water in the range of 300 to 3000 parts per million. The newer silver solutions have a silver range far less than this alleviating any side effects that came with taking the older silver solutions. Only 10 to 20 parts per million of the silver sol is needed to be effective against bacteria, viruses and mold.

So, if silver is an intelligent solution to treating serious infections and superbugs, why haven't we heard more about it and why isn't the medical establishment using it? Well, it is being used as a disinfectant, and added to bandages and linings of catheters, but evidently the general public has not yet been made aware of the latest information on the technological advances of silver and how effective the newest silver preparations are in treating infections. Drug companies aren't interested in selling silver solutions because they can make more money selling antibiotics and drugs to treat infections than they can selling silver treatments.

How long will it take before new silver solutions are recognized in the medical arena as another means to treat and prevent infections in addition to antibiotics and the recommendations made by the CDC? What can be done so more people in our neighborhoods and communities are made aware of how silver solutions can help?

Let's start by doing our own investigating and research on silver solution products and finding out as much as possible about them so we are informed. Spreading the word in person to everyone we know and commenting on it when we are out and about or on the internet is a great way to make others aware there is another logical, affordable solution to treating and preventing infections.

The more people that find out silver solutions work after they have used them and share their story, the more word will get around about silver being another option. Let's all work together on following recommended guidelines when we can and informing others of this new way to help prevent and fight infections.
